April Watercolor Challenge

A friend of mine found a fun month-long daily watercolor challenge that I decided to join in on. I’ll post process pics and my thoughts as I tackle the prompts.

The calendar with each days prompt.

The first day’s prompt was sunrise - so I decided to do a cozy scene with my main character, Maeglin, and his friend Talor. Knocked out a quick sketch and hopped right in. Looking back at my starting point - I should have put some more time in deciding on the interior wall designs now when I could erase. Also it took me forever in the process to spot a major disparity - the arch isn’t aligned on both sides (*heavy sigh*). I fix that problem later though

Quickly blocked in the background colors. Still don’t notice the arch issue.

I begin working on blocking in the foreground shadows and such. Still fail to notice the arch.

I wasn’t sure what color I wanted things in the foreground, so I postpone that level of decision making by doing an inking run. (hahaha it be that way a lot). Still don’t notice the arch issue. Its been several hours at this point.

At this point I’ve pretty much figured out what I’m going to do from here in terms of palette and execution. HOWEVER…. I still am not seeing the issue with that damn archway.

I finish the piece! I take a picture and step away for a bit to go hang out with some friends and go to show them what I’ve been working on and then I see it… the archway… its uneven nature…. taunting me. So I realize 1) I’m in fact not done and 2) shit-I’ve fucked up- this is ink and watercolor, I can’t erase this problem.

So I get my gouache set out.

So I painted over all of the mess ups with the opaque power of gouache. It happens.

And three days later, I finally finish the first prompt hahahaha. Fortunately I’ve already done sketches for the days I haven’t started painting yet. I’m hoping to catch up over the weekend. Also I’ve come to the realization that this will be an insanely long post if I do all of the process of the prompts here, so moving forward each will be its own post.
